7 Days Kilimanaro
Rongai Route

Overview

The Rongai Route ascends over the Amboseli plains and approaches Kilimanjaro’s summit west of the Mawenzi peak. It begins on the mountain’s northeastern flank close to the Kenyan border. It is the simplest camping approach to Uhuru Peak and is a less traveled path. The Marangu Route is typically used for the descent. This route comes in two different versions. You have the option of attempting the summit from either Mawenzi Tarn Hut or School Hut, often known as the Outward-Bound Hut. The first one is longer and more well-liked. It is advised to acclimate beforehand in order to effectively try the latter.

Itinerary

Outline

You will be picked up at the Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), and transferred to your hotel in Moshi town; you will meet your guide who will brief you on your upcoming trek and do an equipment check to make sure you have all the necessary mountain gear. Gear which is missing can be rented on this day

You will be picked up at your hotel in the morning after breakfast and transferred to the Marangu gate located on the western side of Kilimanjaro for registration procedures before transferring to Rongai gate trailhead.  Thereafter precede hiking steadily through the farm land and pine. You may have chance to see the beautiful Colobus monkeys, elephants or buffalos en route. Our first camp will be the Simba Camp located at the edge of the moorland zone at 2625m. Tt is 4-5 hours walk to the camp. Lunch will be taken en-route and dinner at the camp including overnight stay.

The morning hike is a steady ascent up to the Second Cave Camp located in the moorland zone with superb views of Kibo and the Eastern ice fields on the crater rim.  It will take us 5 km, 3 to4 hours walk. Lunch will be taken en-route and dinner at the camp.

Leaving the pine forest behind we carry on with a steady ascent walking though moorland. On the crater rim of Kibo, the tallest of the three volcanoes that make up the mountain, there are magnificent views of the Eastern ice fields. In order to reach the craggy peaks of Mawenzi, the second of Kilimanjaro’s volcanoes, we will divert from the main track and go across moorland on a narrower path. We will set up camp today in the sheltered valley near Kikelewa caves at 3630m. The walk will take us 5km, 3 to 4 hours to reach the camp

This hike is short but steep ascent up grassy slopes which is rewarded by a superb view of the Kenyan plains to the north. As we exit the heath zone and emerge into the Alpine Desert zone, the landscape changes dramatically before reaching our next camp at Mawenzi Tarn Hut directly below the towering cliffs of Mawenzi. This afternoon you have chance to rest or explore the surrounding area to aid acclimatization.  The walk takes 8km, 4 to 5 hours.

We leave our campsite and cross the lunar desert of the ‘saddle’ between Mawenzi and Kibo After a couple hours trekking, reach this spectacular place, Kibo Camp. Kibo Camp is situated directly below the Kibo cone, giving you stunning uninterrupted views of your final destination. It is advised to get rest and prepare for the final ascent. The walk takes 8km, 5 to 6 hours. Lunch will be taken on en-route while dinner at the camp

Around midnight, begin the final ascent to Uhuru Peak 5895m, the highest point in Africa. For the following six hours, hike by flashlight only. The most difficult portion of the whole walk is the hike to the crater rim. Until you reach the crater rim at Gilman’s Point, the walk is extremely steep. As far as hikes go, the ascent from Gilman’s to Uhuru Peak is a gentle one and not too challenging. But the hike is long and exhausting because of the altitude. The crater rim climb takes about two hours. After you arrive at Uhuru, take pictures of your guide and the group there before you start the descend to Horombo Hut.On your return to Kibo Hut, a warm meal awaits you followed by a 1 – 2-hour break before proceeding back down to Horombo. The walk will take 2 km, 12 to 15 hours. Dinner and overnight stay will be at Horombo Hut.

The final step leads to the Mandara Hut (2700m), where a warm lunch is waiting for you after passing through the heath and moor zone. Soon, you will once again pass through the tropical rainforest and after a total time of 6 hours trekking, you will be back at the Kilimanjaro National Park Gate (1860m) where you will collect your certificates to show that you were successful reached the summit of the Mountain Kilimanjaro, the highest mountain in Africa.  The walk will take 20.8km, 8 hours. Then drive back to the hotel in Moshi
